Synopsis of Invitation to Murder

Herman Lewent tries to hire Wolfe to solve a problem related to his family’s finances. Lewent’s father left all his estate to his daughter Beryl in his will 20 years earlier, with the provision that she should take care of Lewent’s needs. She sent Lewent a monthly amount of $ 1,000 until her death, a year earlier, leaving her husband, Theodore Huck, as heir.

Lewent has tried unsuccessfully to persuade Huck to give him a share of the money. But Huck refuses and intends to continue sending him only the monthly payment of $ 1,000. Now, Lewent is concerned that one of Huck’s three employees is trying to seduce him to cut payments to Lewent, and he wants Wolfe to find out who it is.

When Wolfe rejects the case as a family dispute, Lewent mentions that Beryl died of a bacterial poisoning in Huck’s house. He thinks one of the three women killed her. Wolfe passes the case to Archie, who travels to Huck’s mansion, where Lewent also lives.
