Synopsis of Murder by the Book

Inspector Cramer takes an unprecedented step when he goes to request the help of Nero Wolfe to solve a murder whose investigation is stalled.

Leonard Dykes, an employee of a law firm, was found dead in the East River. The only clue was a list of names in his pocket. But Wolfe can’t help at that time.

A month later, he receives the visit of Joan Wellman’s father, a reader of a small publishing house to clarify her death. Joan was killed in a hit-and-run incident late at night.

After reading a recent letter that Joan had written to his parents, Wolfe realizes that the name “Baird Archer”, an author whose novel Joan was reading for the publisher, also appeared on the list found in the Leonard Dykes pocket .

Wolfe orders Archie Goodwin to explore the link between Archer’s novel and the two victims.

For this, Archie arrives at the office of Rachel Abrams, a stenographer, a few minutes after she has been thrown out the window, resulting in her death.

Before the police arrive Archie manages to confirm that Baird Archer was one of Rachel Abrams’ clients.

During the investigation, it is confirmed that Baird Archer was the pseudonym used by Leonard Dykes to write the novel that the murderer is trying to make disappear along with all those who have read it.
