Review of The Retreat – Mark Edwards
Typical English mystery novel mixed with police business.
I really liked it though it’s not a great story, nor extremely original. The thing is, it mixes the horror/ghost element with the police plot.
The atmosphere is very well achieved and there’s just the right amount of corpses, passageways and unexplained mysteries. And the storytelling is very correct and it’s very entertaining.
There’s a love story but it isn’t annoying and it contributes to the resolution of the mystery. I’m not going to tell you if it ends well or badly, of course, but the interest is kept to the end.
The Retreat is a book to have a very pleasant time. Obviously for people who like stories with supernatural components.
And I’ll tell you, when I read the next one, if I still like reading Mark Edwards so much. The next one will be “Here to Stay” which, at the time of writing, has not yet been translated. I know I’m going to have a hard time reading it because it’s a subject that irritates me, but I think I’m going to like it. I’ll keep you informed.
This is highly recommended to have a good time.
