Synopsis of Instead of Evidence<\/h5>\n

Eugene R. Poor, co-owner of a joke products company, and his wife Martha, go to Nero Wolfe<\/a> with an unusual problem.<\/p>\n

Poor believes that his business partner, Conroy Blaney, will kill him and take full control of the company. He wants Wolfe to make sure that justice is done with Blaney when it happens.<\/p>\n

Martha has tried unsuccessfully to persuade her husband to sell his share of the company. But Poor is determined to see his own murderer punished.<\/p>\n

Wolfe accepts a $ 5,000 fee, agreeing that he will only inform the police of what Poor has told him if he dies within one year.<\/p>\n

That night, Inspector Cramer calls Wolfe with the news that Poor is dead, his head shattered by a cigar in his own apartment.<\/p>\n

Upon visiting the scene, Archie learns from Martha that she and Poor had gone out to visit Blaney at their estate in White Plains for a business discussion.<\/p>\n

But Poor had decided during the trip not to go. She left him in a tavern on the way, went alone to the meeting and picked him up on the return trip.<\/p>\n

Once back in the apartment, he had opened a new cigar box and lit one, which exploded with great force and killed him.<\/p>\n

The next day, Cramer brings news to Wolfe that each cigarette in that box had been handled with a small but powerful explosive capsule, manufactured for military use by a different company, and that two of Martha’s hairs had been found inside the box.<\/p>\n
