Synopsis of The Black Mountain
In The Black Mountain, Sergeant Purley Stebbins goes to Wolfe’s house with the news that Wolfe’s old friend, Marko Vukcic, has been shot dead.
After Archie identifies the body, Wolfe joins him in the morgue and insists on going to the crime scene and then to the Rusterman’s restaurant, owned by Marko.
When they return home they find Carla, Wolfe’s adopted daughter. Carla tells them that she and Marko were involved in a movement to ensure the independence of Montenegro.
During the three weeks after the murder, Wolfe follows several lines of investigation and receives a second visit from Carla, enraged that the police are investigating the background of the independence movement.
Soon after, Wolfe receives news from an informant in Bari, Italy. He states that Carla has arrived in Bari and crossed the Adriatic Sea to Montenegro.
This information is followed by a cryptic message about the murderer’s whereabouts: “the man you are looking for is in sight of the mountain.”
Finally, another message arrives stating that Carla has been killed.
Realizing that “the mountain” must be Lovćen in Montenegro, Wolfe makes immediate plans to go there and find Marko’s killer, accompanied by Archie.
