Synopsis of Erle Stanley Gardner

The authentic Erle Stanley Gardner, eletric personality, genial host, man of countless interests, most widely read American Writer of all time, the definitive biography…

With over seventy photographs reproduced in black and white, index, and a detailes bibliography of all of Gardner’s published works.

Erle Stanley Gardner’s first book, The Case of the Velvet Claws, was published by William Morrow on 1 de marzo de 1933. With the possible exception of Thayer Hobson, then president of Morrow, no one was aware that the launching of Perry Mason was to make publishing history. Hobson rather presciently wrote the following line of copy for the jacket: “Perry Mason -criminal lawyer. Remember that name. You’ll meet him again. He is going to be famous.”

He was indeed.

This full-scale portrait of his creator discloses that progression to fame -from Gardner’s Peck’s-Bad-Boyhood through his twenty-year career as a practicin attorney, his brief exposure to marriage and fatherhood, and his grueling struggle to learn to write (a cautionary tale to all of similar aspiration) to the phenomenal success which gave him the freedom and the means to pursue the out-of-doors adventuring and exploration essential to his nature.

Throughout his life, Erle Stanley Gardner was champion of the underdog, and perhaps his most satisfying years were those he devoted to The Court of Last Resort, a board of leading forensic, penal, and legal experts formed to review actual cases of the miscarriage of justice. In many instances these inquiries resulted in the release of men wrongly convicted.
